  USS BLOCK ISLAND REUNION

May 20 - 24, 2019

USS Block Island Reunion

The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #941 and the Fargo-Moorhead area communities are pleased to host the 2019 USS Block Island 75th and Final Reunion from Monday, May 20th to Friday, May 24th.

History of the Block Island

The USS Block Island was the first of two US Navy escort carriers to serve in World War II.  She was named after the island and surrounding sound located off the northeast coast of the United States, now part of Rhode Island.

The USS Block Island was commissioned on March 8, 1943.  She made two trips to Ireland and England with cargos of aircraft before operating as part of a task group designated to find and destroy German submarines.  She earned the nickname FBI (Fighting Block Island) after sinking two submarines and sharing credit for sinking two additional submarines.  The USS Block Island was hit by three torpedoes off the Canary Islands on May 29, 1944 by a German submarine U-549.

The USS Block Island was sunk.  All but six crew members survived.  Of the six aircraft in the air at the time of the sinking, only two airmen were recovered.  Supporting destroyers sank the U-Boat and rescued the crew.  The USS Block Island received two battle stars for her service.
